Wilderness Rites of Passage: A Journey of Becoming — Guided by Earth and Community

Every culture once knew the importance of crossing thresholds with intention of marking the sacred movement from childhood to adolescence, and from adolescence to maturity. At Mount Shasta Nature School, we are rekindling this ancestral practice through our Wilderness Rites of Passage programs. In the wild beauty of Mount Shasta’s forests and rivers, students are invited to pause, listen, and meet themselves in new ways. Guided by experienced mentors, youth step into the elements of wind, fire, water, and earth and to reflect on who they are, what they value, and what gifts they carry for their community.

Why are Rites of Passage Important?

Rites of passage remind us that growing up is remembering who we are. Through solitude, challenge, and reflection, children and teens gain confidence, courage, and clarity. They return with new purpose, ready to contribute to the life of the village.

Our ceremonies are gentle yet profound, rooted in nature connection, storytelling, song, and council. Each child’s journey is honored as a unique expression of the universal path of becoming.

The Journey

  • Preparation — Students engage in storytelling, wilderness skills, and community service leading up to the ceremony.

  • Threshold Time — A guided solo or wilderness vigil where they meet silence, beauty, and the mirror of nature.

  • Return & Integration — Upon return, the community welcomes them with song and reflection, helping them weave insight into daily life.

Every rite is guided by the principles of the 8 Shields mentoring model, Montessori independence, and Reggio-inspired expression,  allowing the youths to approach transformation with creativity, reverence, and safety.

For Ages 12–18 & Adults

Our rites of passage experiences are woven into the Adolescent (Erdkinder) program, with opportunities for deeper immersion each year. Older students may choose an extended wilderness fast or mentorship role for younger peers.
